Motorcycle Boots Buying Guide

Feet and ankles take a lot of abuse on a motorcycle: heat, weather, the weight of the bike at every stop, and the road itself in a fall. Regular shoes are not built for that. This guide explains what makes a proper motorcycle boot and how to choose one.

What makes a boot a motorcycle boot

  • Ankle coverage: the boot should come above the ankle bone.
  • Sturdy sole: stiff enough to stand on the pegs comfortably and resist twisting.
  • Grip: an oil- and slip-resistant tread for wet pavement and fuel-station forecourts.
  • Secure closure: zips, buckles or laces that keep the boot on. Tuck laces away from the chain and pegs.
  • Reinforcement: extra material at the toe, heel and ankle, and under the gear shifter.

Boot styles

  • Cruiser and engineer boots: classic leather, low heel, pull-on or side zip. Comfortable for walking around once you park.
  • Short riding boots and trainers: ankle height, sneaker looks, good for commuting.
  • Adventure boots: taller, with buckles and more shin coverage, for mixed road and trail.
  • Winter boots: lined and water-resistant for cold-weather riding.

Leather or synthetic

Genuine leather is durable and molds to your foot, but needs breaking in and occasional conditioning. PU leather is lighter on the wallet and wipes clean, with less break-in. Product pages state which one you are getting.

Waterproof or breathable?

Waterproof boots keep rain out but run warmer. If you ride mostly in dry heat, an unlined boot breathes better. Year-round riders often own one of each.

Getting the size right

  • Try boots with the socks you ride in. Winter socks can take up half a size.
  • Your heel should stay planted when you walk; toes should not touch the end.
  • Check you can feel and work the shifter and rear brake.
  • Sizing varies between styles, so use the size options and chart on each product page.

Care

Brush or wipe off road grime, let wet boots dry at room temperature away from direct heat, and condition leather now and then to stop it cracking.
